Senj Travel Guide
Senj is a popular tourist destination of Croatia, located on the Velebit channel. No matter what you want out of your Croatian holidays you will find it either in or near this charming town with a population of 8000. To reach Senj, follow the coastal road Jadranska Magistrala either from Rijeka or from Starigrad. The town can also be reached by sea from other towns of Croatia.
The history of this coastal town dates back to the prehistoric times. The settlement of Attienities was first mentioned in Greek documents of 4th c. BC. The town was used by the Romans as a fortress against the Illyrians in the 2nd c. BC. Senj was settled by the Avars and the Croats in the 7th c. In 1184 the town was given to the Templars by Croatian-Hungarian king Bela III, and in 1271 it came under the rule of the counts of Krk, the Frankopans.
Tourist attractions. There can be no Senj holidays without a visit of the City Museum, located in the palace of the Vukasovic family (14th-15th c.), which reveals the Senj history from the Paleolithic times to the recent civil war. One of the most visited exhibitions featured there is the Sacral Heritage exhibition. The most impressive attraction and the symbol of Senj is definitely the fortress Nehaj (1558).
Beaches. If you are in search of fantastic beaches, you can expand your Senj travel and visit nearby villages Bunica and Kalic. Sveti Juraj, Lukovo, Klada, Starigrad are the right places for those who want peace and quiet. There are many secluded bays where you can choose a beach all for yourself.
Restaurants. Budget travelers shouldn’t miss restaurant Leut, where they can try tasty grilled veal liver and delicious barbecued seafood for less than $10. Restaurants Niko and Kresimir are also affordable, with great seafood specialties and sweets on offer. Travelers who are looking for a hang-out place during their holidays in Senj should go to O’Connor’s Irish Pub. Konoba Skver, tavern Stari grad, konoba Val are also nice places with excellent choice of food.
Festivals and cultural events. To have fun at the International Summer Carnival, the greatest event in the town, plan your Senj travel in August. Other events worth mentioning are the Uskok Days, the Festival of north Adriatic klapa singing, and the sailing regatta.
Active vacations. Sport-oriented travelers will love their Senj holidays. Boating, diving, fishing, biking, tennis, football and handball are included in the offer of the town. The Velebit mountains enable active travelers to try mountaineering, caveing and trekking.
